Botanic name Pinus Sylvestris. It belongs to the family of Pinaceae. The tree grows throughout Europe, especially in the northern and eastern areas.
The specific weight is Green 880 kg/m³ – Dried 550 kg/m³.
Use: greatly used for Scandinavian furniture and country-style furniture. Also used for interior and exterior carpentry, window and door frames and packaging.
Characteristics: sapwood pale yellow, almost white. The heartwood is slightly reddish-brown. Inside it often contains resinous sacks that cause an irregular structure of annual rings. It is particularly sensitive to attack by fungi that cause discolouration. In Southern Europe, Maritime Pine (Pinus Pinaster) also exists.
Drying: drying is fast and without major problems, although attention must be paid to the tendency of this wood to warp. It is very important to ventilate it during drying to keep the sapwood from turning bluish.
Surface: straight grain, medium texture. Due to the presence of resin, surface treatments are quite limited and the wood should be cleaned with suitable products. Transparent varnishes with open pores are used.
Gluing: all types of joints are effective. For joints with screws or nails, pre-drilling is recommended.
