Copaifera salikounda

Botanical name is Copaifera salikounda.It belongs to the family of Leguminosae – Caesaipiniaceae.

This tree is diffused in the West Africa from Guinea through Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana to Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon and Congo.

The specific weight is variable 900/1000 kg/m³ al 12 % C.U.

The color is reddish-brown with darker color zones. The grain is often interlocked with frequent figuring in the surface. The heartwood is durable and resistant to insect attack. The wood has a resin content and a slight smell similar to a Ceda.

The wood permits good surface treatment including polishing. However, the must be pretreated to remove the resin.

Thanks to the decorative qualities of this wood, it is used to obtain valuable veneers. It is a material that is still not widespread, but it is expected to be widely used in the furniture and shipbuilding sector.
